Highways

Tunica County has a modern road system with improvements taking place each year as our growth occurs.

Tunica is served by U.S. Highway 61, which runs north and south throughout the county. Twenty miles north of Tunica County, U.S. 61 connects with Interstate 40. Interstate 55 is located 18 miles east of Highway 61.

A portion of Interstate 69 connecting Canada to Mexico is under construction in Tunica County and will connect to Interstate 55, providing direct interstate access to the county. Paving is under way and is scheduled to be completed in November 2006.

State Highways 4, 310 and 315 provide alternate routes into Tunica County from the south. State Highway 3 intersects with Highway 61 in northern Tunica County and follows a north/south route through the county on the east.

Railways
Tunica County is served by Canadian National Railroad with a mainline, welded track running along the eastern portion of the county. Most Class 1 rail systems serve Memphis, Tenn., and all have intermodal yards.

Ports

Tunica County does not have a port presently in place, but has a site selected for a port and can quickly develop these resources.

The Port of Memphis is located 23 miles north of Tunica along the Mississippi River in Memphis. The Port of Memphis is the second largest inland port on the Mississippi River. The port has a channel depth of 9 feet and ranks number one in the United States in foreign import tonnage.

The Port of Memphis is one of the fastest growing designated ports of entry in the United States. Ninety percent of Nike and Williams-Sonoma products clear U.S. Customs here. More than 30 international freight forwarders operate in Memphis.

Airport

In 2003, Tunica County opened a 7,000-foot expanded runway and new Corporate Air Center at Tunica Airport (UTA). Installation of ICS/MALRS, PAPI and AWOS was completed in 2004. A canopy at the corporate air terminal provides for easy access inside the terminal. Air traffic control tower, hangars (private and corporate), commercial apron concrete - 320,000 square feet, commercial terminal, and expansion of the runway to 8,500 feet are some of the improvements completed in 2005. Developed primarily as a charter airport, Tunica Airport expects to become a first-class regional airport providing cargo and scheduled passenger service.

Memphis International Airport is located 30 miles north of Tunica. It boasts nine major airlines, three commuter airlines and 300-plus daily passenger flights. The Memphis International Airport is ranked as the number one cargo airport in the world as it is the home of the Federal Express Super Hub, a major United Parcel Service hub, NWA, RPS and Emory sort facilities. Daily direct flights to Amsterdam are available on KLM.

Tunica Airport hosted the Tunica Air Races in June 2005. This event is only the second location in the U.S. and east of the Mississippi River allowed to race airplanes.
