ABOUT THE CHAMBER
The Tunica County Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in 1953 by a forward thinking group of local businessmen in order to begin the process of industrial development in Tunica County. At that time, the County was heavily dependent on agriculture and these community leaders understood that an economy built on one sector of the economy was not going to suffice in the future.
As a result of their efforts and working with the State of Mississippi, the Tunica Manufacturing Building was constructed in 1958 and began operating as a ‘cut and sew’ facility making feather pillows. As this business grew, it was determined that a new facility was needed and the business was purchased by a major company and expanded to a new facility in 1992 called Pillowtex. Contracts with Walmart and other large box stores kept this facility operating until 2003 when the parent company declared bankruptcy.
In 1992, casino gaming was added to the Tunica economy resulting in a windfall of revenues and providing resources that allowed Tunica to build an infrastructure of roads and utilities to support industrial manufacturing projects. A new organization, the Tunica Convention and Visitor’s Bureau for formed to guide marketing efforts for the casino industry. At the height of the gaming economy this market was a $1.2 billion revenue generator. With increased competition and downturns in the national economy, gaming is still strong and is now a $750 million market and provides almost 9000 jobs in Tunica County.
In 2000 the county hired their first professional economic developer and continued to develop properties suitable for large industrial projects. Tunica has proven to be competitive in this market and over the past few years was selected by two German manufacturing companies, an Italian chemical company, an electric car company and local agricultural related businesses.
The Chamber is governed by a Board of Directors and employs professional staff to manage the business. In 2004 an Economic Development Foundation was formed to support economic development efforts and this organization is also managed by the Chamber.
Our Chamber functions as an umbrella organization to Tunica Main Street, the Tunica Arts Council and assists many local organizations with events. Known as the community’s ‘front door’, visitors often find their way here for directions or inquiries about the town and county. The Tunica Rivergate Festival is an annual highlight in April with music, arts & crafts, children’s attractions, BBQ cooking contest and Crawfish Alley.
